Liguria is the region just south of Piedmont and it marks a part of the Italian border with France. Its major town is Genoa, the first Italian port for travelers. Genoa is known as ‘The Superb’, because of its beauty and its brave sailors and first bankers, which travelled along the Mediterranean, disseminating the first banking system in Europe. Genoa showcases great architecture where the effects of trompe-l’oeil and intense façade colors highlight the shoreline.
A big waterpark and a biosphere are worthy the visit….then walk through the narrow ‘carrugi’ the old streets on the same line of the sea and have a visit to Piazza De Ferrari with its colorful fountain. A short trip to Nervi is also a must-see. You can walk along the ‘Love Promenade’, facing the sea and stop for an ice-cream in a bar. Sit to watch the waves coming in and crashing on the rocks.
Genoa is the capital of Liguria region, but the really amazing area is the Natural Park of ‘Cinque Terre’. From the village of Levanto you can take the local train and visit the fishermen’s villages of Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Monterosso, Corniglia, Manarola. The park is walkable through the romantic ‘Sentiero Azzurro’, which connects the five villages in few miles. Here, you can enjoy the typical ‘focaccia bread’and try the local white wine, not forgetting the tasty extra virgin olive oil.
Liguria main towns (Genoa, Savona, Imperia and LaSpezia) can offer gay hospitality in bars and in b&B, which are a good cheap solutions for travelling along the region. The western side of Liguria connects with France. On the way to the Italian border, San Remo is a joyous town, celebrated by the International Festival of the Italian song, each year in February.
